A college football team is only as good as its starting quarterback.
Sure, there are other factors that come into play, such as the run game offensively, as well as defense and special teams. An outfit with an exceptional defense and mediocre quarterback can still win games, but it often won’t be a conference or national championship-caliber program.
Week 1 of college football is in the books for the Big Ten and some signal callers stood out above the others. The Michigan Wolverines had a ho-hum week and an easy win over ECU. Penn State impressed in the win over West Virginia. Ohio State‘s defense was impressive, but its offense was surprisingly stagnant against Indiana. Indiana thus had no offense against the Buckeyes. MSU may have found something in Noah Kim. Rutgers‘ Gavin Wimsatt took a step forward. Cade McNamara lifted the Iowa Hawkeyes to a new offensive level. Jeff Sims made costly mistakes for Nebraska against Minnesota.
PFF rated all of the above and more. Here is how the quarterbacks currently rank against each other in the Big Ten through Week 1.
