Former New England Patriots receiver Randy Moss put up prolific numbers during his stint with the team.
Moss and Tom Brady broke records in 2007 and boasted one of the most elite offensive seasons in NFL history. Brady threw 50 touchdowns and undoubtedly was a threat with the long ball. The Patriots’ offense was unpredictable and extremely fun to watch. That feeling has dissipated over the past decade and Brady’s game became more decisive. Brady wasn’t going to take off running and his go-to passes travelled less than five yards up the field typically.
New England’s newest quarterback Cam Newton brings an entirely different dynamic to the team, with the ability to run and make different plays. Moss understands this and said on ESPN’s “Get Up” that Newton will show how fun the offense can be.
“I think we are really getting ready to see how fun that offense can really be,” he said, transcribed by WEEI. “Not discrediting anything Tom accomplished because he accomplished some great things, but I think being able to have a guy like Cam Newton that can run the ball, they are able to spread guys out, and then being able to be that viable threat in the passing game that he can just tuck the ball and run.
“I just think what we have seen coming out of New England for the past let’s say 20 years, there is going to be a change in New England. But, I think we are going to see them have a lot more fun out there and Cam Newton is going to give them that opportunity for the fans, not just the New England Patriots fans, but the football fans around the world to really see how fun this offense can really be.”
Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels can open up the playbook entirely and have a completely new approach. The Patriots have big and strong receivers with N’Keal Harry and Mohamed Sanu that’ll space the field out and provide deep threats.
The Patriots will look much different in 2020, and Newton’s ability could prove to be lethal with the incredible football minds that surround him.
