Rams plan to sign Blake Bortles off Broncos practice squad

The Rams will be without Jared Goff on Sunday, with John Wolford getting the start in his place.

The Los Angeles Rams will be without Jared Goff on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals after the quarterback suffered a broken thumb and underwent surgery to repair the injury Monday. John Wolford will get the start, but as an emergency option, Blake Bortles will also be available.

Sean McVay said during his media session Monday that the team will sign Bortles off the Broncos’ practice squad. He won’t start over Wolford, but he will be the third-string quarterback in the event that something happens to Wolford or Bryce Perkins ahead of the game. Given the way this season has gone with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s always best to have a backup plan, which is the case for the Rams here.

Wolford will see his first NFL action after only playing in the preseason and spending time in the AAF, so it’s especially important for L.A. to have someone with experience at this level. Bortles was with the Rams last season and attempted two passes, completing one for 3 yards. He also ran twice for a loss of 9 yards in three appearances for the Rams.

The Rams can clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Cardinals, or a loss by the Bears to the Packers on Sunday afternoon.
