Rams only had 4.5% chance of beating 49ers late in fourth quarter

The 49ers appeared to have the game in their hands before the Rams snatched it from their grasp

The Los Angeles Rams came into Week 3 as sizable underdogs against the San Francisco 49ers, especially being the home team. After their 41-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, few people were picking the Rams to take down the defending NFC champions.

Their pre-game odds weren’t great but their chances of winning late in the fourth quarter were even worse. According to ESPN, the Rams only had a 4.5% chance of beating the 49ers with 4:57 left in the game after Jordan Mason rushed 4 yards for a first down to Los Angeles’ 42-yard line.

At the time, the 49ers were up 24-17 and a field goal would’ve made it a two-score game. The Rams ultimately got the stop they needed and Jake Moody missed a 55-yarder, but they appeared to be on a losing path before the kick sailed wide of the uprights.

After Moody missed and Matthew Stafford hit Tutu Atwell for 50 yards, the 49ers still had a 67.4% chance to win and a 69.1% chance after the Rams tied it at 24.

The Rams were sure to remind everyone on social media just how unlikely their win was.

What a win and what a comeback led by Stafford. The Rams needed this game badly and their miraculous comeback might’ve saved their season altogether.
