Today the NFL world is mourning the passing of long-respected coach Jim Fassell. The 1997 coach of the year in his first season with the New York Giants, had a 58-53 record as head coach in New York.
Fassell took the job just two years removed from serving as the QB coach for the Raiders in 1995. The Raiders put out a statement after the news of Fassell’s passing.
“The Raiders Family was saddened to learn of the passing of longtime NFL coach Jim Fassel. A Las Vegas resident, Jim coached quarterbacks for the Raiders in 1995 during a playing and coaching career that spanned four decades. The prayers of the Raider Nation are with the Fassel family at this time.”
Jim Fassel’s final season as a coach at the NFL level was in 2006 at the age of 57.
Fassel’s son John would spend four seasons as the Raiders’ special teams coordinator from 2008-11. Meanwhile, his father became the head coach of the United Football League’s Las Vegas Locomotives from 2009-12.
That was Jim’s final season as a pro football head coach, and he remained a resident of Las Vegas until his passing. He was just 71 years of age.
