Raiders GM Mike Mayock says QB Derek Carr had ‘exceptional’ 2020 season

By all accounts, the 2020 season was the best of Derek Carr’s career. He finished the season with the most passing yards, highest yards per attempt and the highest passer rating of his career. But what did general manager Mike Mayock think about his season despite the 8-8 finish?

In a recent interview with Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, he talked with Mayock about the 2020 season and Carr specifically. Here is what he had to say about the team’s franchise passer:

“First of all, I think the most important point is that Derek did have an exceptional year. I think he’s gotten better each year with Jon, which is kind of exciting to us internally. As far as any kind of contract conversation, we deal with that directly with the players only.”

Mayock is correct about Carr’s improvement under Gruden. Since 2018, he has seen his yards per attempt and passer rating rise in each of the last three years. He also was far more aggressive throwing the ball down the field this season, something Carr has been criticized for a lot during his career.

Carr might not be a top-five quarterback in the NFL, but several teams would be lucky to have a passer like him. If the Raiders can improve their wide receiver corps and keep their offensive line healthy, there is no reason why Carr can’t be even better during the 2021 season.
