Auburn quarterback [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] has been recognized for his time under center in 2022.
The Tigers quarterback, who transferred from Oregon at the beginning of the offseason, was named to the SEC All-Freshman team on Thursday. Ashford is the only Auburn player to make the list, which is dominated by members of the LSU Tigers (six players).
The circumstances behind Ashford’s nomination are interesting, however. It would seem that Ashford may be the only quarterback eligible to be named to the SEC’s All-Freshman team β he’s the only quarterback in the conference to have played more than 10 games this year, so he may have been given the nod by de facto rather than by skill. Ashford finished the year with 14 total touchdowns, seven interceptions, 1,613 passing yards and a 49.2 completion percentage.
As it stands, Ashford is likely set to be the starter over fellow freshman Holden Geriner, who is the only other quarterback on the roster after the departures of T.J. Finley and Zach Calzada. However, it’s also possible that coach Hugh Freeze will look to a blossoming transfer portal to find a solid option, so Ashford’s fate on the roster with its new incoming staff is unknown heading into the team’s transition period.
