We all know that the Miami Dolphins are loaded with draft picks. With more reinforcements coming when the 2020 compensatory picks are released, Miami is set to boast the most robust draft collection in the league. But if we were tasked with quantifying exactly how much draft capital the Dolphins have at their disposal? It’s pretty mind blowing.
According to Jimmy Johnson’s old school NFL Draft pick trade value chart, the Dolphins have at least 150% the draft capital of 29 NFL franchises this season. That number comes courtesy of Tankathon.com.
According to Tankathon, the Miami Dolphins’ collection fo draft picks is worth a collective 4,502.9 points — the most in the NFL this offseason. Second is the Cincinnati Bengals, whose picks are credited at 4,041.2 points. The only other team that Miami doesn’t have at least 150% the value of in draft picks is the Detroit Lions, who pick 3rd. Their point total is 3,205.6 in total.
Where is this most important for the Dolphins? Trade value. The entire point of the point assignment to draft picks is to quantify how much value a pick has in a trade. The Dolphins? They could trade 5, 26 and 56 for the 3rd overall pick in a trade for a quarterback and Miami would still have the 2nd highest point total in the league — and trail the Bengals by less than 100 total points for the top valued class.
Of course, Miami is hoping they won’t have to surrender capital — but this serves as a good reminder for fans who are worried that the Dolphins are going to get fleeced in trade negotiations to remember that the Dolphins are the team that has the ability to throw their weight around and bump fringe competitors off the bidding board.
Having this much at their disposal is a weapon that the Dolphins can use in the build up to the 2020 NFL Draft.
