The Houston Texans selected Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft Thursday evening.
Stroud threw for over 8,000 yards and 85 total touchdowns during his two years as the starter at Ohio State. He was a two-time All-Big Ten Conference and a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist with a Rose Bowl victory and appearance in the 2022 College Football Playoff semifinals.
For Houston, Stroud fits a huge need. He’s the most accurate passer in the draft and has the needed mobility to run new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s offense at an extremely high level. Many pundits considered him a close 1B in this draft to Alabama quarterback Bryce Young while others even considered him the best player at his position.
His natural accuracy should lend itself well to the West Coast offense and the quick, rhythm passing game that it asks of its passers. Stroud should have no problem taking advantage of new tight end Dalton Schultz and wide receiver Robert Woods. Young receivers John Metchie and Nico Collins will look to take huge strides in their games with Stroud’s accuracy and play extension.
The selection found a perfect talent to address Houston’s biggest need on the roster. The new franchise quarterback for the Texans should allow Ryans and the whole team to have a real chance to compete immediately in 2023. The selection is an A-plus and one that makes long-term, football, and fan-base sense.
After a season of many empty seats and embarrassing comments, Houston should look for a little more relevancy and a little more excitement around the team next season. Stroud will play a huge part.
