Projecting the post-spring Michigan State football special teams depth chart

A number of positions will be up for grabs with the Michigan State specialists in 2020.

Punter

  1. Mitchell Crawford (Sr.) or Tyler Hunt (Jr.)

Redshirt freshman Jack Bouwmeester was expected to be the guy at punter in 2020, but he left MSU and returned to Australia after the 2019 season. Michigan State went the grad transfer route to secure his replacement, landing fellow Aussie Mitchell Crawford from UTEP. Crawford probably has a slight edge over Hunt based on experience, but his numbers weren’t great at UTEP. He ranked 86th in the country in punting average in 2019. Now, UTEP was a very bad football team last year and it’s not fair to put all of the team’s punting struggles on the punter. So we’ll see. I imagine Tyler Hunt will get a crack at the job, so I’m leaving it as an “or” situation for now.
