Projecting the Packers’ post-draft depth chart at quarterback

The Packers picked Jordan Love in the first round, but will he beat out Tim Boyle to be the backup behind Aaron Rodgers in 2020?

The Packers’ polarizing pick of Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round is sure to add a new spice to the quarterback room in Green Bay. While Aaron Rodgers’ job remains safe, the rest of the depth chart at quarterback will be in question.

The Packers’ front office might view Jordan Love as the future of the franchise, but Rodgers will remain in the driver’s seat for the time being. The 36-year-old future Hall of Famer is coming off a productive season in 2019. He threw for 4,002 yards and 26 touchdowns while tossing just four interceptions. Rodgers’ play during the 2020 season will go a long way in determining his future in Green Bay. The veteran quarterback has four more years left on his contract, but with Love breathing down his neck as the future at quarterback, Rodgers will need to continue to play at a high level.

The Packers aren’t going to guarantee Love the backup job, but they didn’t make him their first-round draft choice just so he could sit at the bottom of the depth chart. Obviously, he won’t earn the starting job as a rookie, but the former Utah State quarterback does have a great shot at becoming the top backup to Rodgers. Love, whose college career was bookmarked by inconsistencies, will look to begin polishing his game in Green Bay as a rookie. Love’s talent is undeniable, but he still has many things to improve before Matt LaFleur hands him the keys to Green Bay’s offense. Barring an injury to Rodgers, the rookie will most likely see action sparingly in the 2020 season.

QB3: Tim Boyle

Serving as the backup to Rodgers last year, Boyle will battle Love for the QB2 position in his third season on the Packers roster. In the 2019 preseason, the Eastern Kentucky product flashed his skill, throwing for 356 yards and six touchdowns on 34 completed passes. After the Packers used their only first-round pick on Love, Boyle suddenly has the deck stacked against him. The 25-year-old does have the experience advantage over Love, though. If LeFleur decides that the rookie is not ready, then Boyle could be the safer pick for the backup quarterback role. He’ll have to beat out Love during camp to survive.

After cutting Manny Wilkins, the Packers picked up Morton as an undrafted free agent. Morton, who was a two-year starter at Prairie View A&M, will join Green Bay for training camp in 2020. The 6-foot-3, 237-pound quarterback will have an opportunity to fight his way onto the practice squad, especially if Love beats out Boyle and the Packers need a third quarterback. Morton is a dual-threat quarterback who Dane Brugler ranked as the 31st best quarterback in the 2020 draft class.
