Projecting Michigan football’s 2020 depth chart

Using both some inside intel as well as plenty of guesswork, here’s who we think will see the field for the Wolverines this fall.

Running Back & Fullback

Zach Charbonnet (or) Hassan Haskins (or) Chris Evans
Christian Turner
Blake Corum

This is what we call a quality problem.

We couldn’t decide on one starter, just like Michigan couldn’t last year, as both Zach Charbonnet and Hassan Haskins both got starts throughout the year, and both had show-out games. But there’s something of a wrench (the good kind) in the situation: Chris Evans, who likely would have been the first man on the field at the position last year, returns after a one-year suspension due to academics. However, he had a full year off of football, so there’s no telling just how well he’ll get re-acclimated back to running the ball in pads once again. All three of the aforementioned could get starts, and that might even be the most likely scenario.

Behind them, Christian Turner has constantly been an inch away from being a breakout player, according to what his teammates and coaches have said the past two years. However, injuries have slowed his progress and production, and he needed some work on pass protection compared to the others last year. However, if he’s healthy, he very well could see the field quite a bit as well.

Don’t count out: Though he’s currently an early-enrollee, Blake Corum has everything you’re looking for in a running back. If he knows the playbook in his first year and can pass protect, he could jump right in and make some noise in year one.

The only problem is that there’s just one ball and five players who all could feasibly challenge for playing time.

Like we said, it’s a quality problem.

Fullback

Ben Mason
Matt Brown

You can’t forget about “Bench” Mason!

Michigan doesn’t use a fullback nearly as much as it used to, but that’s Mason’s role, and the Wolverines will find ways to get him on the field. After a stint with the defense last year, Mason is back to being a full-time fullback, and can be a threat in the passing game as an outlet just as much as in short-yardage running situations.

Don’t count out: Former Solon (OH) standout Matt Brown.
