Projecting Michigan football’s 2020 depth chart

Using both some inside intel as well as plenty of guesswork, here’s who we think will see the field for the Wolverines this fall.

Offensive Line

Tackle Guard Center Guard Tackle
Ryan Hayes Chuck Filiaga Zach Carpenter Andrew Stueber Jalen Mayfield
Trevor Keegan Karsen Barnhart Nolan Rumler Joel Honigford Trente Jones

We’re not differentiating between the right and left side here, but this is certainly who we think the starting five will be.

Jalen Mayfield is the sole returning starter, in the sense that he had the job all season long last year. However, Ryan Hayes started the first two games in place of a then-injured Jon Runyan Jr. and acquitted himself well, considering it was his first real action in his second year. Andrew Stueber started two games at right tackle, playing against Ohio State and Florida in 2018. He’s got the body type to be able to move inside to guard, and we’re assured that he would be one of the best five that Michigan has on the roster. Now that he’s healthy, we anticipate a potential move inside for him.

Chuck Filiaga is a former four-star who’s been waiting in the wings. With Ben Bredeson and Michael Onwenu now in the NFL, the fourth-year interior lineman will finally get his chance to move into the starting lineup after spending much of his time on special teams. The last starter is second-year OL Zach Carpenter, who by appearances seems to be the heir apparent to Cesar Ruiz in the middle. Certainly Nolan Rumler, who was a four-star center at Akron (OH) Archbishop Hoban could challenge for that role, but for now, we have Carpenter winning the job.

There was some attrition as far as the fifth-years are concerned, so the backups we have are mostly second-year guys, with the exception of Joel Honigford, who moved to the interior last fall after Stueber’s injury forced the Wolverines to look at some different options.

Don’t count out: While we mentioned him as a backup, Paw Paw (MI)’s Karsen Barnhart made a solid first impression and could challenge for a starting role in just his second-year.
