What Kaleb Johnson is doing this year for the Iowa Hawkeyes is not normal. His play is at a high level that has not been seen in Iowa for some time, and most of the country for that matter.
Despite defenses loading the box and knowing that a handoff to Kaleb Johnson is coming, he has still been able to gash teams in chunks and find the endzone time and time again.
Even having already surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in just eight games, Kaleb Johnson is still flying a bit under the radar nationally. Pro Football Focus’ Dalton Wasserman believes it is time to put more recognition upon Kaleb Johnson.

“The year Kaleb Johnson is having needs to get more recognition,” Wasserman said in a call to put more national acclaim on the Hawkeyes’ star running back.
Part of the reason Kaleb Johnson has been less discussed is due to the historic year that Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty is having as he chases Barry Sanders’ historic rushing record.
While Johnson may not have the outright numbers Jeanty does, he is second to him and is doing it in many ways that make his year equally as great as Jeanty’s.
Johnson has already set career marks in yards and touchdowns and is on pace to set his personal best in yards and carries per game. Through eight games, he has 1,144 yards on 146 carries for a strong average of 7.84 yards per carry to go with 16 rushing touchdowns.
