The Indianapolis Colts are expected to return from summer break on July 28 for training camp so we will be taking a look at each position group before the entire team reports.
Starting with the quarterback position, the Colts made a big change this offseason in signing 38-year-old veteran Philip Rivers to replace Jacoby Brissett, who moves back to his role as a backup.
The Colts also added Washington product Jacob Eason with their fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He will be competing for the QB3 role with Chad Kelly.
Expected Depth Chart
QB1 | QB2 | QB3 | QB4 |
Philip Rivers | Jacoby Brissett | Jacob Eason | Chad Kelly |
Player To Watch
This will be an obvious one, but Rivers will have all eyes on him. With Brissett struggling as a starter in 2019, the Colts gave Rivers a fully-guaranteed deal worth $25 million. He’s the unquestioned starter and will be barring injury.
However, he has to prove that his 2019 production wasn’t a new trend. Rivers had a 3.8% interception rate to go along with 20 interceptions, both of which were the second-highest of his career since becoming a starter.
His aggressive play style should benefit the passing offense, but the Colts have to make sure he doesn’t give games away being reckless.
Storyline To Watch
This again pertains to Rivers and the impact he has on the entire roster. The Colts showed they were good enough to compete with poor quarterback play in 2019. Now, they need Rivers to prove them right in that he can still lead an offense to the playoffs.
The 38-year-old will be the talk of the town once he arrives for training camp and much of the team’s success rests on his shoulders.
