If you’re a fan of defensive football, then you’ll enjoy what breaks out in Norman on Saturday. A defensive slugfest between two aggressive and active fronts will define the game.
First-year starters at quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. and LaNorris Sellers have nearly identical completion percentages, but Sellers is averaging more yards per game. Hawkins will need to be more aggressive in the passing game for the Sooners to find consistent success. If he begins to sling it and can keep the South Carolina defensive front off balance, the Sooners will have a chance to win the game.
But if Oklahoma gets into longer downs and distances, it’ll be another long day for the Sooners true freshman quarterback.
Defensively, it’s all about Oklahoma playing consistent ball. When they’re at their best, the Sooners are difficult to score on. But when they’re not playing assignment sound, they can find themselves out of position, which leads to missed tackles and poor fundamentals.
Sellers is a quarterback capable of creating big plays with his arms and legs. Danny Stutsman and company will need to stay true to their responsibilities or Sellers will create big gains on the ground.
Ultimately, the Sooners’ defense and Luke Elzinga create good field position for the offense and Oklahoma’s able to take advantage for a couple of touchdowns in this game.
Sooners 17, Gamecocks 13
