Power Rankings: Clemson football’s Cade Klubnik among nation’s top 5 quarterbacks

Here’s what college football analyst Tom Fornelli said of Cade Klubnik this week after another dominant performance by the junior quarterback.

Clemson Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik is having quite a season.

The junior from Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, has led the Tigers to six straight wins and a No. 9 ranking in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll and AP poll after another stellar performance in a 48-31 win over the Virginia Cavaliers last Saturday in Death Valley.

Klubnik threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns, including two to tight end Olsen Patt-Henry, on 23-of-35 passing in that game. Clemson scored 35 straight points to erase an early 10-3 deficit en route to a 38-10 lead after three quarters.

The Tigers finished with 539 yards of total offense, marking the second week in a row they’d gone over the 500-yard mark. For the season, Klubnik has thrown 20 touchdowns (he’s rushed for four more) to three interceptions and for 1,836 passing yards.

The Tigers control their own destiny in the ACC race and have a clear path to the conference championship game in Charlotte and the College Football Playoff if things keep going the way they have.

On Wednesday, longtime college football analyst Tom Fornelli updated his weekly Power Rankings of the nation’s top quarterbacks. Klubnik landed at No. 4, trailing Cam Ward of the Miami Hurricanes, Dillon Gabriel of the Oregon Ducks and Garrett Nussmeier of the LSU Tigers.

Fornelli wrote of Klubnik:

“We gave Cade his flowers last week, and it was another clinical performance against Virginia. He finished with 337 total yards and three touchdowns, though he also had an interception. It’s easy to nitpick the schedule Clemson has faced since getting pasted by Georgia to open the season, but there’s no denying this team is playing very strong football right now, and Klubnik is at the head of the charge.”
