The North Carolina Tar Heels are off to a 6-0 start this season and arguably the most surprising reason for that is the defense. After struggling in previous years, the Tar Heels’ defense under Gene Chizik has been fantastic this season.
With players like Kaimon Rucker, Cedric Gray, Des Evans, and Power Echols anchoring the defense, they have been fantastic so far. And one of those players is earning some national recognition for his play.
On Wednesday, Echols was named to the Associated Press Midseason All-American Second Team. He was the lone Tar Heel to make any of the teams that were released as we have hit the midway point.

The junior out of Charlotte is having a good year with 40 total tackles, a forced fumble and an interception. He’s been in the middle of UNC’s defensive success this season.
If the Tar Heels want to continue their dominant play on that side of the ball, they are going to need Echols and others to continue their hot play.
