The Jacksonville Jaguars recently acquired Jay Gruden to be their offensive coordinator, and it seems a lot of his former players could be on the open market soon as the Washington Redskins are looking to overhaul their roster. One of the more interesting names who is likely to be a part of the upcoming cuts is tight end Jordan Reed, who would free up $8.5 million.

As many are aware, Reed when healthy has been a legitimate threat for Washington, but unfortunately, since signing a $50 million extension with $20 million in guarantees in 2016 he’s missed 33 games. That includes the whole 2019 regular season with concussion issues. Additionally, the team has changed coaching staffs and Ron Rivera and company have no history with him.

As for the Jags, they will unquestionably be on the market for a tight end. We declared the position their second-biggest need this offseason as they received very little production out of it in 2019 and dealt with several injuries there.

So if injuries hurt the Jags last season, why would they give Reed a shot?

Well, the answer is simple: he’d come at an affordable price in all probability. That’s exactly what the Jags need granted their cap situation. Additionally, he could be enticed to reunite with Gruden, who aided him to his only Pro Bowl season (2016).

If Reed is an option for the Jags at tight end, however, they still should go for a marquee name at the position. That way if Reed lights it up in the preseason and makes it out healthy, the Jags would go into the regular season stronger than they’ve ever been before at tight end.

Last season, the Cincinnati Bengals extended tight end Tyler Eifert (a player with a similar history to Reed) to a one-year extension worth four million with $1.2 million being guaranteed. That’s the perfect type of deal for the Jags to try and get Reed on as it could be a low-risk, high reward situation for both sides.
