Potential lottery pick Usman Garuba named to Spain’s final Olympic roster

Garuba wrapped up his stay in Las Vegas with a four-point, eight-rebound effort in a loss to the United States on Sunday.

Projected first-round pick Usman Garuba on Monday was among the players named to Spain’s 12-man final roster for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the team announced.

Garuba, who was born in Madrid, played with Spain during its exhibition schedule from Las Vegas, Nevada. He wrapped up his stay with a four-point, eight-rebound effort in a loss to the United States. He also added two assists and was a team-high plus-11 on the court.

After a tune-up run in Las Vegas, Spain will travel to Tokyo to begin its final preparations for the Olympic Games. They will compete in Group C during the Olympics, along with Argentina, Japan and Slovenia, and will begin play on July 26 versus Japan.

Garuba is widely projected to be a mid to late first-round pick following a strong run in Europe with Real Madrid. He is viewed as one of the top defensive prospects in the draft and has drawn comparisons to OG Anunoby and P.J. Washington.

The 19-year-old averaged 4.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 79 games among the EuroLeague, Spanish ACB and Spanish Cup competitions. He earned EuroLeague Rising Star honors after averaging 3.9 points and four rebounds in 39 league games.

He boasts a reported 7-foot-3 wingspan that figures to intrigue teams at the next level. He projects to make an impact on both ends of the floor, and has shown an ability to hit from 3-point range, converting on 30.3% from beyond the arc this season.
