After Oklahoma’s two-game skid in conference play, losing on the road to the TCU Horned Frogs and to the Kansas Jayhawks, Porter Moser spoke about the team needing to get back their defensive identity. They allowed an average of 79 points in those two games.
That is 14 points above their average this season. Last week, Oklahoma had two very winnable games in a conference that has proven to be tough for everyone. They ended the week going 2-0 and allowing 64 points per game.
“It’s got to be every game,” Porter Moser said. “You can’t win in this league unless you are defending. Every team defends. If you’re not defending at a high level, it makes it very hard.”
The thing that stood out the most against the Cincinnati Bearcats was Oklahoma’s athleticism. Last year’s team struggled mightily against athletic teams. That’s one reason why the staff put such an emphasis on getting more athletic in the offseason.
That showed against the Bearcats. The Sooners were able to handle their length and athleticism, which ultimately led to being able to defend them at a high level. If they can keep up the defensive effort, the Sooners should be dancing come March.
