The Jacksonville Jaguars will be returning from their bye this week with the Houston Texans in their sights for Week 9. When they return to the gridiron Sunday, however, they will be likely without their QB1 in Gardner Minshew II, who is dealing with fractures and a strained ligament in his right thumb.
Of course, this means the Jags will either replace him with veteran Mike Glennon or rookie Jake Luton, both of whom would be taking the field for the first time as a starter. That said, the pressure could really be on for Jags coach Doug Marrone to make the right decision as Sunday’s game feels like a must win for him when considering the team’s 1-6 record.
If the decision is all about experience, Glennon might get the nod as he’s started in 22 games over the span of his eight-year career. However, he will enter Week 9 with numbers that don’t really stick out with a 60.9% career completion rate (488-of-801) for 5,163 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and 20 picks.
On the other hand, if the Jags are basing the decision off potential and upside, they could give Luton the nod. It certainly doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibilities after the team was fine with making Minshew their QB2 last season. That’s an important tidbit for the simple fact that Luton is a sixth-round pick, too, who the Jags were impressed with in camp.
Regardless of what direction Marrone goes in, we probably won’t know until later in the week. However, we would still like to hear from those of you at home in terms of your personal preferences.
Should it be Glennon who gets the nod because of his experience, or would you all prefer him because he likely won’t mess up the Jags’ draft positioning? Or should it be Luton who gets the nod as he offers the Jags potential for the future and the Texans an unfamiliar opponent? Let us know in the poll below.
