The Minnesota Vikings are set to release running back Dalvin Cook if they cannot find a trade partner, which has led to reports that the Denver Broncos are expected to pursue the running back.
The Broncos’ connection is clear — Denver general manager George Paton was serving as Minnesota’s director of player personnel when the Vikings used a second-round pick to draft Cook in 2017.
Broncos coach Sean Payton has also made it clear this offseason that he plans to pound the rock in 2023 — Denver signed two offensive linemen, a blocking tight end, a fullback and a running back during NFL free agency this spring.
And while the Broncos do already have Javonte Williams, he is currently working his way back from a serious knee injury. Samje Perine, the team’s current No. 2 RB, started eight games as a rookie in 2017 and hasn’t started more than two games in a single season since then.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Payton adds another RB to the rotation given his stance on the position.
“I was taught a long time ago to stack them up at that position,” Payton said in May. “It’s a tough position in our league.”
