Police video shows Sterling Brown bloodied after Miami strip club attack

The body-cam video, which has the audio muted, shows Brown and Rockets teammate Kevin Porter Jr. in animated discussions with police.

Body-cam video from the Miami Police Department shows Houston Rockets guards Sterling Brown and Kevin Porter Jr. in an animated chat with officers before Brown received treatment from paramedics. The incident occurred on April 19 outside the Booby Trap strip club.

Brown, who is shown covered in blood, reportedly needed multiple heavy stitching jobs for his facial injuries, and the incident left many around the organization with grave concerns that day regarding his health. (The 26-year-old is now expected to make a full recovery.)

Porter was also “roughed up a bit” in the incident as he attempted to defend Brown from the assault, according to reports.

The video was disclosed by Andy Slater of Fox Sports 640 South Florida, who reports that police have opened an internal investigation into the interactions between the officers and NBA players. “This is the reason part of the body-cam video is muted, for now,” Slater writes.

According to an April 21 report by The Athletic, Brown and Porter went to the Booby Trap strip club when the Rockets were in Miami earlier that week. From there, Brown is said to have entered the wrong sprinter van on his way out of the club and had a heated exchange of words with those in the vehicle. That led to those individuals jumping Brown and physically beating him up. Brown’s agency representation at Priority Sports is working with a private investigator and Miami police to investigate the incident, the report by Shams Charania and Kelly Iko indicated.

Upon attempting to assist both males, and gather information as to what occurred, both males became belligerent and refused to cooperate. Several attempts were made to gather information from (Brown), who kept insisting he did not want to provide his information, he only wanted rescue to take him to the hospital.

It’s unclear why Brown and Porter allegedly did not want to cooperate, though it could be because their trip to the strip club was a breach of the NBA’s new health and safety protocols for COVID-19.

While Porter was forced to miss three games due to a violation of the protocol, he has since rejoined the Rockets. Brown remains sidelined with what the team has listed for weeks as left knee soreness — though the attack and resulting wounds clearly compounded his problems.

Brown’s return timetable for the 2020-21 season is not yet known.
