The New England Patriots have a long way to go before they have to make a decision about quarterback Cam Newton. But that won’t stop us from thinking about what they might do.
Newton is playing on a one-year, incentive-laden deal that supremely undervalues his contributions to New England. The quarterback has said the deal with the Patriots was not about the money. And he has said he’s not thinking at all about what the future holds. So it will be interesting to study Newton and Bill Belichick in the coming months — much like we studied Tom Brady and Belichick as the quarterback negotiated his contract extensions. We’ll be piecing together clues on what will come next for Newton: an extension, the franchise tag or unrestricted free agency?
We discuss that topic, the Patriots’ win over the Raiders and New England’s upcoming game against the Chiefs on this week’s Patriots Wire podcast.
