Playing the Odds: Touchdown Wire’s Week 5 NFL Preview

It is getting late early for Mark Schofield, who is running out of time to turn around his record this season. Let’s dive into Week 5 and play the odds.

Transparency can be humbling. Urban Meyer-level humbling.

When the idea for this weekly column was put in front of me, I thought that being open, honest and accountable with weekly picks would be good for the soul, and would open the door to some self-scouting.

The only door it has opened is the one to our liquor cabinet.

Sure, last week our fearless hero finished 8-8 overall, pushing the overall record on the year to 25-34. Not brutal, but certainly not a winning record nor anything to be proud of. But thanks to the Buccaneers and the Vikings, we also saw our hero finish 1-2 on the “big three” picks of the week, leaving him at 5-7 on those for the season. So even the games I feel most confident in, I am losing more than I am winning.

Now, as I pour yet more wine, let’s get into Week 5. As always, the three big plays are listed first, and then we dive into the rest of the games. Odds are provided by our friends at Tipico, picks are made against the spread, if you play, play responsibly and if you take anything away from these picks, maybe do not listen to me.
