Penn State football is on a bye week at the midway point of the 2021 season, but fans can now begin planning for their first taste of the 2022 Nittany Lions. Penn State has confirmed a date for its annual spring game in Beaver Stadium.
Penn State announced the annual Blue White spring game will be held on Saturday, April 23. Although a start time for the spring game will be determined at a later time, it is expected the game will be held in the early afternoon. Any television coverage options will also be confirmed later on, if that applies.
And if everything continues to go as planned, this will be the first spring game at Penn State to be open to a full stadium capacity since 2019. Penn State did not hold spring football practices in 2020 due to the early responses to the pandemic shutting down a major chunk of the sports calendars across the country. Penn State held spring practices in 2021 and opened two scrimmages to fans inside Beaver Stadium, although capacity for those scrimmages was limited.
It will be easy to see some of the major storylines to follow during the 2022 spring practice season for Penn State given what we have already seen in the 2021 season. The top storyline will potentially be the competition to be the starting quarterback as Sean Clifford will no longer be available. Ta’Quan Roberson and Christian Veilleux could be going head-to-head for the starting job, and there should be some focus on where incoming quarterback Drew Allar will fit into the picture once he eventually arrives on campus.
Penn State’s defense will also need to show some development following some expected notable departures in players like Jaquan Brisker Tariq Castro-Fields and PJ Mustipher.
Penn State’s 2021 season will continue next weekend with a homecoming game against the Illinois Fighting Illini.
