Philip Rivers to coach HS football after retirement

Rivers will be a HS football head coach after retirement.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers was signed to one-year deal hoping to bring the team back to the playoffs in 2020 and while his career could continue on after this season, he already knows what he will be doing following his retirement from the NFL.

On Friday morning, Rivers was named the head coach in waiting for the football team at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, AL. Their athletic director will serve as the interim head coach until Rivers eventually retires from the NFL.

“It’s a special day for me and my family really,” Rivers said via Alabama.com. “I will probably get a little emotional. I had two childhood dreams. One was to play in the NFL, and I’m now going into my 17th season. The other was to be a high school football coach as my dad was. How blessed am I to be able to live both of those out!”

Rivers will focus on leading the Colts offense in the present and while he has said he hopes the contract will go for more than just the 2020 season, he also admits that it is on a year-to-year basis.

“I think it is a one year at a time deal,” Rivers said. “You get to 38 and play as long as I have … I’ve expressed publicly and the Colts have said too they hope it’s more than one year. But we take it one year at a time. I love playing. When that time does end, you will get the same passion and work ethic at this school and community that I’ve poured into my career.”

The Colts are hoping Rivers can get them back to the playoffs and even beyond. While he does that, he already knows what his life after the NFL will look like.
