Every team has that guy who brings the edge and brings heart and energy to the team. He’s not always the most talented guy, but he is the one who will deliver an “in your face” speech or have teammates back.
For the Philadelphia 76ers, that guy is Mike Scott. He is the one who will provide a spark when the team needs it off the bench as he will bring that edge and that toughness to make a difference when the time calls for it. He still has value to this team, but stats-wise, his numbers were down from the season before.
2019-20 season averages
6.0 points
3.6 rebounds
0.8 assists
42.6% overall percentage
36.9% from deep
Vocally and in the locker room, Scott served a purpose as he was a positive influence on the younger guys on the team. His outgoing personality and his ability to talk to and lead the youngsters was very beneficial for them and their development moving forward.
On the court, it was tough to really play him. Scott’s hustle will make up for a lot of the differences, but he does need to knock down shots from the perimeter to have an effect on their offense. There was a stretch in November where he shot only 18.5% from deep where he could not throw a rock in the ocean, but he followed that up by shooting 39.3% from deep for a stretch in December and he then had similar peaks and valleys like that the rest of the season.
He did not get much burn in the playoffs as he averaged only 5.0 minutes in the four games and he missed the only two 3-pointers he took in the series. He had fallen out of the rotation a bit after suffering an injury inside the bubble, but the team still had a role for him as a leader.
Scott is a candidate to be traded in the offseason, but it is more likely that he will remain with Philadelphia. In that likely case, the Sixers will need better shooting and they will need him to pick it up more on the floor. That would make him a much more valuable player to this team.
