The Chicago Bears had one of the NFL’s worst offenses last season. But wide receiver Allen Robinson has been the most consistent part of Chicago’s offense since he arrived in 2018.
Entering the final year of his three-year, $42 million deal, the Bears would be silly not to lock up Robinson long-term. Robinson himself has made it clear that he wants to remain in Chicago for the long-term, and it’s up to general manager Ryan Pace to make it happen.
Robinson recently revealed that there haven’t been any contract talks between him and the Bears, which isn’t necessarily uncommon for Pace at this time of the year. Now, if the regular season begins without any contract discussion, then it might be time to worry.
Pro Football Focus examined one veteran that each NFL team could trade this season. And while Robinson is easily the best player on Chicago’s offense, PFF believes the Bears could trade him.
Robinson still has not received a contract offer from the Bears with his deal expiring at the end of the season. That could lead him to play out the season and sign elsewhere. It’s hard to blame him — a WR can only put up with poor quarterback play for so long.
If the Bears start the season slowly, wide receiver-needy teams will be calling the Bears for Robinson, and considering the team might be in the market for a quarterback in 2021, it could use all the draft picks it can get.
A midseason trade would immediately vault Anthony Miller to the projected target leader on the team from the slot. We saw his production skyrocket after an injury to Taylor Gabriel in 2019 — he averaged eight targets per game when starting.
Robinson has been one of Pace’s better free-agent acquisitions, and he’s solidified himself a clear-cut No. 1 receiver. Look no further than last season, where Robinson thrived despite Chicago’s offensive deficiencies. He tallied a career-high 98 catches for 1,147 yards and seven touchdowns.
Just imagine what Robinson could do with solid quarterback play, which hopefully he’ll get this season with whoever lines up under center for Chicago.
