Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll isn’t rushing any decisions about who starts at quarterback heading into the final preseason game of the summer. In fact, he claims his team might have two No. 1 options at the position.
(On if it is possible that the guy who starts the opener will not be starter for season) “I don’t know that. Really, think about it? I mean it’s a great question because you’re trying to figure it out, but I don’t know that. I mean we are just going to wait and see what happens. Today is a really big day for me. I find out what they look like today. The guy is coming back from Covid. He made it back two days ago, did fine. He made it through all the walk-thru stuff yesterday and did fine. Let’s see how he goes today and we’ll see where it fits, but I’m not closing the book on anybody competing for their spots. We have two enormous weeks coming up. The finish of this one and next week is a huge week for us then we come back with another full week and an extra day, so we got a lot of time here to work it out on my schedule. Maybe you’re not feeling that schedule, but on my schedule we’re okay.”
(On what he’s saying about quarterback competition and not having starter yet) “I’m saying we weren’t afforded that opportunity this time around. I can go ahead and just call it, but I want to let the guys battle and show where they are and let us get as much information as possible. Geno (Smith) has done a really good job of being in that position. His voice is solid. He’s on point all the time. He’s been very consistent with his work and all of that and Drew has been really sharp. I know it’s not supposed to be a good situation when you have two quarterbacks and it means you don’t have one is the old saying, but I don’t know though we might have two 1’s. We’ll see what happens.”
Carroll says the team will take as much time as they need to make the decision.
