The unending saga of where former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams continues his college career has taken a somewhat unexpected turn as Wisconsin has joined the fray for the quarterback’s services.
The No. 1 player in the transfer portal has been consistently linked to USC considering the relationship with Lincoln Riley, but last week LSU emerged as a contender for the Sooners transfer quarterback. Now, the Badgers are joining the fray according to a report from On3 Sports’ Gerry Hamilton.
While it was thought that his decision could already be made, according to the story linked above by On3’s James Fletcher, Williams could theoretically wait until March to make his decision because some schools operate in a quarters system instead of semesters.
Wisconsin hasn’t necessarily been known as a quarterback factory, but another transfer quarterback made his way north and ended up in the NFL; Russell Wilson. After a successful stint at North Carolina State, Wilson transferred to the Badgers and was drafted in the third round by the Seattle Seahawks. He’s been one of the best quarterbacks in the league over the last decade and Caleb Williams could look to follow suit.
According to On3’s story, becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft continues to be the driving motivation for Williams and his family as they search for their next team. Most assumed that meant USC, but with LSU and Wisconsin in contention, it would appear all bets are off at this point.
The only thing safe to say is it appears Caleb Williams isn’t returning to Oklahoma and the Sooners are well-prepared for life without their former starting quarterback. Immediately in the aftermath of Williams transfer portal declaration, the Sooners landed Dillon Gabriel through the portal.
