One of Penn State’s newest additions to the special teams unit is already on the national radar as one of the top punters in the nation. [autotag]Riley Thompson[/autotag], who transferred to Penn State from Florida Atlantic during the offseason, was named to the Ray Guy Award watch list.
The Ray Guy Award is presented annually to the nation’s top punter by the Augusta Sports Council and is named after former All-Pro punter Ray Guy. The award was first presented in 1990 to Wisconsin’s Kevin Stemke.
Thompson, a native of Australia, was one of the top punters in Conference USA in 2022 with 61 punts for 2,770 yards and 15 punts of at least 50 yards with 26 punts inside the 20-yard line and just three touchbacks. Thompson averaged 45.4 yards per punt in 2022 for the Owls and was the nation’s 12th-best punter for average punt yardage.
No Penn State punter has ever won the Ray Guy Award, so Thompson will be looking to be the first winner in school history. Last year’s winner of the Ray Guy Award was Adam Korsak of Rutgers.
Congratulations to these punters who have been nominated to our 2023 Ray Guy Award watchlist!
