Penn State in top 10 of preseason CBS Sports 133

CBS Sports ranked all 133 FBS teams for the 2023 season. Here is where Penn State starts.

Top 25 polls are for casual college football fans, and there is nothing wrong with that. What the real diehard college football junkies want is a full ranking of every FBS team in the sport at any given time. CBS Sports is one of the outlets posting a full ranking of all 133 FBS teams from best to worst and updating it weekly throughout the season. And now the preseason ranking of all 133 teams has been shared.

Not surprisingly, Penn State finds itself in a solid ranking to start off the new season. The preseason CBS Sports 133 has Penn State ranked seventh overall, which looks to be a pretty trendy starting spot for the Nittany Lions based on various preseason rankings that have been shared since the end of the 2022 season. Of course, as is typically the case, Penn State is still just the third highest-ranked Big Ten team in the preseason ranking. Michigan comes in second and Ohio State is right behind at third in the preseason ranking.

Two-time defending national champion Georgia is at the top of the list. The only other teams ranked ahead of Penn State are LSU (no. 4), Alabama (no. 5), and USC (no. 6). Florida State, Clemson, and Washington round out the top ten.

Penn State’s season-opening opponent, West Virginia, starts the season ranked no. 75 in the CBS Sports 133 ranking. Penn State’s other FBS nonconference opponent, UMass, is the very last team on the list at no. 133. Penn State also faces Delaware, an FCS opponent, in nonconference play.

Here is where every team on Penn State’s schedule sits in the preseason CBSSports 133, ranked from highest to lowest (Delaware is not included):

  • Michigan – 2
  • Ohio State – 3
  • Iowa – 25
  • Maryland – 33
  • Illinois – 36
  • Michigan State – 58
  • West Virginia – 75
  • Rutgers – 76
  • Indiana – 86
  • Northwestern – 98
  • UMass – 133
