Today is one of the biggest days of the year in college football as Penn State and Boise State meet in the first-ever CFP Quarterfinal game at 6:30 p.m. The popularity of college football has never been higher, but the sport is also like the Wild West right now between NIL decisions and the transfer portal.
The portal and NIL were two major factors in Nick Saban’s decision to step away from the Alabama Crimson Tide, and now other coaches are beginning to see his point. As the Nittany Lions prepare for their first-ever Playoff game, they will be without backup QB Beau Pribula who has already entered the transfer portal. While you can’t blame Pribula for wanting to start a new future, it’s a massive blow for a team with national title aspirations.
Last week, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin hinted at the idea that Saban would make for a great commissioner of the sport. Now, Penn State’s head coach James Franklin is picking up on the idea of a commissioner saying,
“We need somebody that’s waking up every single morning and going to bed every single night thinking about what’s in the best interest of college football… I think Nick Saban would be the obvious choice. That would be a very, very important step moving forward to come up with some solutions and do what’s best for our sport.”
Even though Saban is an Alabama man at heart, he has spent time all over the country and is as passionate as anyone about the sport. If there is one man who could resolve all of the issues, it’s someone like Saban who deeply understands the changes that need to be made.
