Penn State freshman Kalen King earns first preseason All-American recognition

Penn State freshman Kobe King earned freshman preseason All-American honors ahead of the 2021 season

It has not taken long for the college football world to take notice of Penn State freshman cornerback Kalen King. After a brilliant debut in the spring as an early enrollee, King has now earned some preseason All-American recognition heading into the 2021 season.

King was named to the 247 Sports Freshman All-American preseason team recently, helping King get an early jump on what could be a growing list of accomplishments during his time as a Penn State cornerback.

King was the No. 16 cornerback in the Class of 2021 according to 247 Sports, but he has quickly proven himself a valuable asset for the Nittany Lions. King scored the first score of Penn State’s first spring scrimmage when he returned his first interception for a touchdown.

Here’s what 247 Sports had to say about King:

A spring arrival for the Nittany Lions, King has continued to turn heads throughout fall camp, carrying over his momentum from the spring practice period. It’s been noted that head coach James Franklin and corners coach Terry Smith have been impressed with his ability to acclimate to the speed of the college game so quickly as he’s already projected to be in the two-deep, look for King to continue his campaign for early playing time this fall.

Penn State’s secondary looks to be in pretty good shape for the 2021 season even if King does not see too much playing time. With players like Tariq Castro-Fields and Joey Porter Jr., King likely will not be getting an early chance to start this fall unless the injury bug catches up to the Nittany Lions. But King may also be too talented to keep off the field too long. He does still have to prove he can read college offenses reliably before being tested too much. As talented as King is and for as much potential as he has, it’s one thing to thrive in spring and another to do so against live opponents you haven’t been practicing against.
