Can’t wait for the start of the 2022 Penn State football season? Good news. You are now two days closer to the new season kicking off than you were when the day started.
It was officially announced on Thursday that Penn State’s season opener at Purdue has been moved up two days on the calendar. Penn State and Purdue were originally scheduled to open the 2022 season in West Lafayette on Saturday, Sept. 3. The new date for the season opener will place the game under Thursday night lights, on Sept. 1 instead.
Penn State’s road opener against the Boilermakers will mark the third consecutive season Penn State will open on the road with a Big Ten conference matchup. Penn State opened the adjusted 2020 season with a road loss at Indiana and opened the 2021 season with a defensive victory at Wisconsin.
Penn State leads the all-time series with Purdue, which dates back to 1951, with a lopsided 15-3-1 advantage. Penn State has won the last nine meetings in the series since 2005. the most recent meeting in the series was played in 2019, with Penn State winning in convincing fashion, 35-7. Penn State’s last trip to Ross-Ade Stadium was in 2016, with the Nittany Lions returning home with a 62-24 victory.
The 2022 season opener will be the earliest date for a matchup between the two schools. Prior to the 2022 season, the earliest a game between Penn State and Purdue was played was on Sept. 27, in 1952.
