How much stock you should put in way-too-=early top 25 rankings or power rankings is up to you, but it is mildly entertaining to evaluate just what the read is on Penn State at various points in the offseason. And according to Mark Schlabach of ESPN, the Nittany Lions may have a little more work to do out of the spring than initially expected.

Schlabach updated his offseason power ranking following the conclusion of the spring football season to account for updates out of the transfer portal and more since the release of his way-too-early top 25 earlier in the offseason. Penn State was still top 25 team in the eyes of the veteran ESPN college football writer, but Schlabach’s outlook for Penn State has taken a slight step back.

Schlabach dropped Penn State from No. 22 in his way-too-early top 25 to No. 23 in his post-spring power ranking. Schlabach’s view on Penn State hasn’t changed much since his previous ranking. Instead, Penn State’s drop of a spot comes as a result of some other programs moving up as Schlabach reshuffle the order a bit.

Coastal Carolina moved up from No. 23 to No. 21, forcing Penn State and the Texas Longhorns to be moved down a spot. Texas moved from No. 21 to No. 22.
