Penn State Blue-White game preview: 5 questions for the offense

Penn State’s offense has been the main story of the spring. On Saturday, fans will get to see what the fuss is all about.

3. How much has Brenton Strange grown into his role at tight end?

Following the injury to Pat Freiermuth last season, Brenton Strange stepped into the leading role at tight end, and he showed off some glimpses of what he can bring to the table.

But now, Strange is no longer the backup looking to fill in for a banged-up starter. He is the guy at tight end. some of the reports coming out of the spring have suggested Strange has shown he is ready to take on the role of being the top tight end in the offense, which is always encouraging to see. But the tight end position could benefit from seeing other options continue to develop under new tight ends coach Ty Howle as well.

4. What’s the status of the running game?

What was projected to be a strength of the team in 2020 turned into a work in progress for the Nittany Lions almost right out of the gates of the 2020 season. Noah Cain continues to work his way back to 100 percent and it may not be expected we see much of him, if we see him at all, in the spring game. But the rest of the running game could be on display.

Penn State fans will get their first look at Baylor transfer John Lovett, who has quickly taken on a leadership role as a veteran player from his time in the Big 12. but fans will also look forward to seeing Devyn Ford and Keyvone Lee back on the field after watching both work through their development out of necessity last fall.

5. How are the other receivers developing?

Don’t expect to see too much of Jahan Dotson in Penn State’s spring game. There is little need to have one of Penn State’s top offensive players on the field for the final spring practice, even with a new offensive coordinator. Instead, pay attention to how players like Daniel George, Parker Washington and Keandre Lambert fit into the new offensive scheme. All three had some highlights last season as the entire wide receiving unit took steps forward last season. Now, with a new offensive coordinator, how will these younger options in the passing game fit into the mix?

Penn State has a lot to look forward to in what could potentially be a big bounce-back season. But before facing a challenging schedule in the fall, it is important to end the spring on a positive note. Good performances and staying free of any additional injuries is essential for success in the fall.
