Pelicans floating JJ Redick, but should Nets bite?

The Pelicans are shopping JJ Redick, and the Brooklyn Nets are among the teams New Orleans is trying to do business with.

The Nets are not done making changes to their roster, but adding another sharpshooter doesn’t seem to be a fit for Brooklyn — despite the fact no team can have too many long-range options in today’s NBA. So, as much as the New Orleans Pelicans are eyeing Brooklyn as a landing spot for JJ Redick, per Shams Charania of The Athletic, the fit doesn’t make a ton of sense.

The Nets shipped away more than a plethora of draft capital in the James Harden trade. Furthermore, Brooklyn don’t have a ton of young talent; while Reggie Perry has shown promise, he still has a long way to go before his fit in the league is determined, and Nic Claxton (right knee tendinopathy) remains injured, so it’s impossible to gauge how he’s grown from his rookie year. It’s hard to imagine the Nets have more to offer than either the Boston Celtics or Philadelphia 76ers in trade talks, who are also on among the teams New Orleans is “focusing on” as potential trade destinations for Redick, per Charania.

Sure, Redick would be helpful — even though he’s been off from long-range to start the season. But the Nets have Joe Harris, and Brooklyn’s three stars have been lights out from deep. Jeff Green has also helped in that department, and it’s hard to imagine the Nets have already completely given up on Landry Shamet — as much as they reportedly tried to shop him.

If the Nets are looking to making adjustments to the roster, it should be for defensive purposes above all else.
