Paul Pogba’s second spell with Manchester United will end when his contract expires at the end of June, the club has confirmed.
Pogba came up through United’s academy but left to join Juventus in 2012, only to return four years later in an £89 million deal, making him the world’s most expensive player at the time.
His return to Old Trafford was mixed. At times Pogba dazzled, looking every bit like a player who garnered a near nine-figure transfer fee. He also won a League Cup/Europa League double in his first season at the club.
But those would be his only two trophies in his spell at United. As the club failed to reach its usual heights, Pogba oftentimes found himself injured or out of form.
The 29-year-old will leave Old Trafford having failed to completely live up to expectations, something the club tacitly acknowledged in its announcement of his departure.
“But for a boy that joined the Academy at 16 to make over 200 United appearances and lift the Youth Cup, along with two major pieces of silverware – not to mention the World Cup at international level – is something that should be applauded and celebrated,” the club said.
“Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Paul on his successful career, and thank him for his contributions to Manchester United. We wish him all the best for the next steps on a remarkable journey.”
Pogba bids farewell to United
Pogba posted his own goodbye on social media, saying: “I feel privileged to have played for this club. Many beautiful moments and memories but most importantly an unconditional support from the fans. Thank you Manchester United.”
