The New England Patriots will kick off their 2021 preseason with a home matchup against the Washington Football Team.
This will be the first game the Patriots have fans in Gillette Stadium since the 2019 postseason against the Tennessee Titans. Cam Newton and Mac Jones will continue to battle for the starting role as the preseason begins. Newton is coming off an underwhelming season, mostly due to a myriad of difficult circumstances. Jones, who was drafted with pick No. 15, appears to be pro-ready and will see his first bit of NFL action.
The Football Team will feature Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback with Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke coming off the bench behind him. Washington’s defense is much stronger than its offense and the Patriots will be prepared for a unit that averaged 2.9 sacks in 2020.
