Patriots sign LB to 53-man roster in wake of Joshua Uche trade

With Joshua Uche gone, the Patriots are restocking their linebacker position

The New England Patriots made a couple of moves on Tuesday in the wake of linebacker Joshua Uche being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

They signed linebacker Ochaun Mathis from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, while also signing wide receiver Braylon Sanders to take Mathis’ place on the practice squad.

Mathis has already appeared in three games for the Patriots mostly as a special teams contributor. He has been in on 40 special teams snaps for the team in total, while only contributing on five defensive snaps.

The former sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft has shown some promise as a contributing edge defender for the Patriots. He’ll fit in as a rotational piece behind more established playmakers like Deatrich Wise Jr., Keion White and Anfernee Jennings.

Meanwhile, Sanders will serve as another project receiver for the Patriots to work with behind the scenes. He came into the league as an undrafted rookie in 2022 and spent two seasons with the Miami Dolphins.

There should be plenty of opportunities for him to prove himself in a Patriots receivers’ room with more questions than answers right now.
