The New England Patriots placed cornerback Jonathan Jones on injured reserve on Saturday. He had been dealing with a shoulder injury that he appeared to suffer in the team’s Week 6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He did not practice in any of the team’s three sessions in Week 7.
Jones had been the team’s starting nickel cornerback, and will be a challenging player to replace, with the team lacking depth behind him.
Jones is a part of the cornerback group that includes J.C. Jackson, Myles Bryant Jalen Mills, Joejuan Williams, Justin Bethel and Shaun Wade. Wade was ruled out for Sunday with a concussion. The Patriots promoted Bryant from the practice squad this week.
In preparation for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, the Patriots elevated defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale and offensive line James Ferentz to the active roster from the practice squad. They will join the active roster for just Sunday and will every back to the practice squad on Monday.
