Patriots LT Isaiah Wynn ready to put competitive nature on display in 2020

Without a doubt, Isaiah Wynn will be one of the most important pieces for the Patriots.

Without a doubt, Isaiah Wynn will be one of the most important pieces for the New England Patriots.

The standout left tackle is entering his third NFL season with hopes to remain healthy and available. Wynn was a first-round draft pick in 2018, but missed his rookie year because of an ACL tear. He was placed on the injured reserve list in 2019 with a toe injury — playing only eight games.

With Wynn on the field, the Patriots’ offense looks noticeably better. He’s an exceptional run and pass-blocker who takes pride on being versatile. Wynn spoke with Patriots.com and discussed how his competitive nature made it difficult to miss so many games in his career so far.

“Of course it’s tough just from a competitive nature,” Wynn said. “That’s the aspect that ate me up; my competitive nature and wanting to be out there to help the team any way I can.”

When it comes to preparation this year, he’s viewing the season as if it’s Year 2.

“Last year for me really was my really rookie year, so I had some occasional rookie ups and downs especially coming back the last [six] games,” Wynn said. “I still have a lot of room to improve on. I’m looking forward to getting back out there and being out there regularly.

“This offseason was my first official offseason because I’m able to just go out and work out and not rehab. It’s been different. It’s great being able to still be involved with everything that’s going on with our team with the meetings and all that, but that aspect of not having that camaraderie of being in the same facility together is missed. Other than that it’s been great.”

Patriots legendary offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia officially retired this offseason, leaving a huge void to fill. Wynn discussed his time with Scarnecchia and showed appreciation for the moments he had.

“My short time with Scar I enjoyed very much,” Wynn said. “My perspective is obviously limited but to me he is the best there is. He will be missed and he’s very respected. [Popovich and Bricillo] have experience under Scar so it’s been good. We haven’t really noticed too much of a change and we’re all eager to get started.”

The Patriots haven’t announced their starting quarterback, but it’s very likely Jarrett Stidham will earn the role. With that in mind, the Patriots will likely have a run-heavy offense that keeps some pressure off of Stidham. Wynn will have the all-important role of opening lanes for rushers — while keeping Stidham safe and secure in the pocket.

Wynn’s role with be extremely important this season and it all begins with his health.
