The New England Patriots are considering sitting rookie quarterback Drake Maye in the regular season finale in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills.
When asked if sitting Maye was a possibility, coach Jerod Mayo said all things were under consideration when speaking with media members on Monday.
The move would make sense considering the Patriots aren’t in the playoff hunt, and they currently own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. It’s a valuable position to be in to potentially garner more assets in a major trade-down scenario with a quarterback-needy team.
This would also give the team a chance to potentially look at what rookie backup Joe Milton III has to offer under center. There are no certainties that Jacoby Brissett will return next season, which could bump Milton up as the No. 2 option.
“It’s absolutely a possibility,” Mayo said, when asked about Milton being active, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “But like I said earlier, all things are still under consideration.”
