Patriots considering benching star running back due to fumbling issues

There’s a chance Rhamondre Stevenson doesn’t start on Sunday

There’s a chance that veteran running back Antonio Gibson is the starter for the New England Patriots in Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins. Per Patriots coach Jerod Mayo, the team is considering benching current starter Rhamondre Stevenson due to fumbling issues.

Stevenson has fumbled the ball in each of the team’s four games this season. It’s becoming a real problem for a Patriots team that can’t afford to turn the ball over.

The offense is a mess right now, and they don’t have the firepower to overcome those mistakes.

Gibson has done a better job of protecting the football, and he’s also shown a little more explosiveness in runs than Stevenson in the last three games.

The Patriots extended Stevenson to a four-year, $36 million contract in the offseason. They clearly have a big belief in his talent, but he also needs to earn back some of the trust lost from the fumbling problems.

That lesson could mean him coming off the bench and playing behind Gibson for a little while.
