Patriots CB texted Alex Van Pelt for more opportunities on offense

Should the Patriots utilize Marcus Jones more on offense?

New England Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones wants to get more involved offensively to the point where he reached out to offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt for an opportunity.

That led to him getting his first opportunity of the season in last week’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. He was in on a couple of snaps, including a five-yard run play, for the Patriots’ offense.

The 2022 third-round draft pick has experience playing on the offensive side of the ball. He did so in college and even had four catches for 78 yards and a touchdown for the Patriots in his rookie season.

The Houston product has primarily been used as a cornerback and kick returner throughout his NFL run. Defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington recently compared Jones’ dual-threat abilities with what Colorado’s Travis Hunter has been able to do in college football.

Perhaps there will be more opportunities in the near future, but according to Van Pelt, the recent opportunity started with a text message.

It’s intriguing to think about what Jones could do in a bigger role offensively. Perhaps his speed and big playmaking ability in certain spots could add another spark to the unit.
