When the Carolina Panthers officially made their move for now former Cleveland Browns star Baker Mayfield, their roster number went from 90 men to 91. So, somebody had to go.
That somebody, as announced by the team on Tuesday morning, was quarterback Davis Cheek.
The Matthews, N.C. native joined the organization back on April 30, as one of 14 initial free-agent signings following the 2022 NFL draft. He’d go on to stick into the No. 4 spot on the depth chart—so to speak—participating in rookie minicamp and team organized activities through the spring and summer.
Cheek spent his last four years at Elon University in Elon, N.C. There, he’d amass 8,548 passing yards with 51 touchdowns to 21 interceptions while earning nods as a Second Team All-CAA member and a Walter Payton Award Finalist in 2021.
With Cheek now butted out, this leaves the Panthers with four passers on their current roster—Sam Darnold, Matt Corral, PJ Walker and Mayfield.
