Here’s how and what to watch for in Foxboro, Mass.

History

These two teams aren’t strangers when it comes to exhibition play, having matched up 11 times in the preseason dating back to 1999. New England holds the upper hand in those contests with a series record of 8-3.

The eight non-preseason tilts—including Super Bowl XXXVIII—are split at four apiece. Their most recent meeting came last year, when the Patriots dominated the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium to the tune of a 24-6 win.

What to watch for

We still don’t have an official decision on the team’s quarterback competition. Heck, we may not even see much of Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold this evening.

What will we see, however, are the battles for backup spots continue to materialize. Head coach Matt Rhule said on Wednesday that this outing will be one primarily for the second and third-string guys.

So, keep an eye on quarterbacks PJ Walker and Matt Corral, running backs Chuba Hubbard and D’Onta Foreman, wideouts Rashard Higgins, Shi Smith and Derek Wright and the bulk of the secondary, among others.
